Did you know Redcliff has a Composting Facility?
The Redcliff Landfill uses an Aerated Static Pile (ASP) Composting Facility to remove food waste and organics from the Landfill. Doing so produces a Grade A composted product, available for residents and communities in the area to enrich their yards and gardens. The ASP is expected to result in a cumulative reduction of approximately 77,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. This equals to removing nearly 23,600 cars off the road for an entire year.
How does it work?
An ASP is a hot composting method which minimizes unpleasant odors while rapidly breaking down food waste and organics. Compost materials are piled on top of perforated pipe connected to fans that circulate oxygen. This process speeds up the composting time by balancing the oxygen and moisture needs of the recipe. The pile is then covered with clean wood chips and water which acts as a bio filter which insulates and blocks odors from escaping. After 14-28 days, the mounds are cured and screened for sale.
What is the Environmental Impact of Composting?
An ASP is one of the most economical and time-saving composting styles. By diverting organic waste from the Landfill, the ASP reduces carbon dioxide and methane emissions. This method of composting offers an environmentally superior alternative to disposing of organic material in the Landfill.
What are the cost and benefits of composting organics?
The Redcliff Landfill excepts clean organic material at their Composting Facility for $25.00 per ton. This saves local grower businesses in the surrounding area willing to separate garbage/string and recycle their clean organics $50.00 per ton. Not only would you be saving money and reducing gas emissions in our Landfill, but you would also be doing what’s best for our environment. Residents of Redcliff (non-business) are welcome to bring out their food waste containing no garbage free of charge.
