Project Update: Water Distribution Main from Main Street to the Water Treatment Plant
After a pipe connection failed on a water distribution line (located just West of Main St, on 8th Ave), a Special Council meeting was held on Tuesday, July 23rd where Council approved the replacement of the entire distribution line from that location to the Water Treatment Plant, approximately 260m.
We are pleased to inform our residents that the project is complete, and the Operations Department plans to open the distribution line tomorrow morning at approximately 9:00. To remove any sediment, we will be flushing a nearby hydrant. Residents in the immediate area might see some discolouration. If you do notice any discolouration, run your taps until the water runs clear.
Some interesting facts about the project:
– This newly updated HDPE pipe is one of two distribution lines running from the Water Treatment Plant to the supply system of the Town. The other distribution line was updated to PVC when the new water treatment plant was constructed.
– The original water distribution line, that was recently replaced, from the Water Treatment Plant was installed in 1972 and was a 300 mm asbestos cement (AC) pipe. A 350 mm HDPE pipe was installed in its place to ensure that the inside diameters were the same and that the waterline was accurately sized for the water demands of Redcliff. Using updated HDPE pipe is an effective, cost-efficient way to provide a distribution line from the Water Treatment Plant that should last 50 + years.
– High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a lightweight, stronger, and corrosion resistant pipe that was installed using a method called pipe-bursting. Pipe-bursting is a trenchless method of replacing buried pipelines and can be used for water, sewer, and even natural gas lines.
